I have Rats in my ceiling

Hearing scratching in the ceiling at night? Here’s what those sounds usually mean, what damage rats can cause, and the fastest way to stop them.

It can happen to anyone – even this Pestie.

We recently found rats in our own roof, and the signs were the same ones we see in customers’ homes all the time.

It usually starts with scratching in the ceiling at night, little footsteps above the bedrooms, or a strange smell that seems to come and go. If that sounds familiar, there’s a good chance you’ve got rats or mice using your roof void as a nesting area.

Rodents in the roof are more than just noisy. They can chew wiring, damage insulation, contaminate ceiling spaces with droppings and urine, and keep multiplying if the problem isn’t dealt with early.

Some of the most common signs include:

  • Scratching, running, or gnawing sounds at night.
  • Droppings around the roof space, garage, pantry, or outdoor areas.
  • A strong, stale, or musky smell near the ceiling or walls.
  • Chewed materials, rub marks, or disturbed insulation.

A lot of people try traps first, and in some cases they help, but traps alone usually don’t solve the whole problem. If entry points stay open, new rodents can keep getting back in. Lasting control depends on getting on top of the current activity and working out how they’re entering the home.

The most effective approach is usually:

  • Inspect the roof void and surrounding exterior for activity and access points.
  • Use targeted treatment to bring the current infestation under control.
  • Reduce attractants such as accessible food, rubbish, and overhanging vegetation.
  • Seal or screen entry points to help stop the problem coming back.

Tip: We commonly see palm fronds, shrubs, and tree branches touching or hanging close to homes with rat and mice problems. Rodents can use these as highways to get into your roof, so keeping your garden pruned can make a big difference.

At this house below – we found the rodents were using these palm fronds to climb up and crawl in through a gap in the roof into the ceiling above the master bedroom.

If you’ve been hearing movement in the roof, it’s worth acting quickly before the damage gets worse or the infestation spreads. The earlier rodents are dealt with, the easier it is to get on top of the problem.
