Coastal brown ants under pavers in Townsville: what to look for

As we move through the wet season in Townsville, we’re seeing a lot more coastal brown ants turning up around loose pavers.

These ants love the voids in between and under pavers. In this photo from a recent job in Douglas, a colony had established in the small gap between the concrete slab and the underside of the pavers, using this “satellite colony” as a staging point to collect food from inside the house and take it back to the main nest.

TIP: Look for frass (ant dust) showing up in the cracks as little mounds – a sign you may need to intervene.

Coastal brown ants are small brown ants that can form massive colonies in your yard and then come into the house, causing a real nuisance. Under worst-case conditions, they can start nesting in wall voids, under bathtubs and other hidden spots, where they’re much more difficult to treat.

Ants are usually “just” a nuisance, and an early, appropriate treatment from a licensed pest technician can save you a lot of time and money on ineffective DIY attempts.
